The Empowerment of Haiti Benefit

The Empowerment of Haiti

Wed, June 15 — Art in Motion, Chill Marketing, and Paco Lampecinado presented The Empowerment of Haiti: A benefit concert for Haiti’s Hope and Konbit Mizik at The Box in New York.  Hosted by Monica Watkins and Nick Cannell, attendees experienced an inspiring musical line-up, a highly-esteemed host committee, an exquisite art exhibit “Pou Solèy Leve” by Haitian orphans, and a live Skype chat with members of the Haitian community.

In April 2011, Ford model, artist, and humanitarian Monica Watkins was sponsored by Haiti’s Hope and Friends of Hope Int’l. to visit the Diakonos Orphanage in Port-au-Prince where she conducted art workshops, believing in the importance of creative education. Inspired by the time spent working alongside the youth, Watkins brought the artwork back to the big city for a charity auction during The Empowerment of Haiti Benefit and Concert.

Also inspired by the poverty and pain in Haiti, Nick Cannell co-founded Konbit Mizik with Ian Evans: a not-for-profit recording studio and music school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The not-for-profit’s mission was to empower Haiti’s youth through music and foster education, workforce development, and artistic expression.

With the dedication of Nick Cannell, co-founder of Konbit Mizik, Monica Watkins, founder of Art in Motion, and the support of benefit attendees, members of the New York philanthropic community raised not only money but awareness for the importance of the arts.
